The Braves got nailed earlier this year for in the international free agent market, and the punishment for those infractions is still being decided by MLB commissioner Rob Manfred. Ken Rosenthal writes at the Braves are almost certain to face a “substantial” fine and the loss of several prospects in their system, along with “severe” restrictions on their ability to scout and sign players outside the United States. MLB is wrapping up its investigation and is expected to make an announcement on just what those sanctions entail early next week, turning Braves executives into big turkeys on the baseball stage. The biggest name involved in this probe is 17-year-old Kevin Maitan, who was signed out of Venezuela and has been hyped to the level of his countrymen Jose Altuve, Felix Hernandez and Miguel Cabrera in some baseball scouting circles. TRENDING: The Braves allegedly entered into oral agreement with players who were too young to sign with the team, and also exceeded spending allotments on international free agents.
Oct 10, 2013 A 15-year-old Alabama boy died two days after he hanged himself following an arrest for streaking across the field of a high school football game.
Last year, the team doled out $15 million for prospects on the first day of the international signing period, which far surpassed the $4.75 million bonus allotment. Some might describe what the Braves are accused of doing as being baseball’s equivalent of the NCAA’s “recruiting violations” that doom college sports programs, leading to monetary penalties and loss of scholarships. General manager John Coppolella has in disgrace, and his reputation for not giving even the faintest of cares about the rules was well-documented in MLB circles even before this news came out. To put it mildly, John Coppolella was not well-liked among his peers. Well-loathed would be more accurate. A lot of schadenfreude right now.
— Jeff Passan (@JeffPassan) This isn’t the first time a franchise has been nailed for tampering, and the last time it happened may provide insight into what fate awaits the Braves. The Boston Red Sox got smacked for exactly these sorts of violations in 2015 and ’16. The players they signed as a result of illegal tampering were all declared free agents, and Boston lost the ability to sign any international players for an entire year. If the same fate befalls Atlanta, it could certainly hamper the rebuilding efforts of a team that is coming off a disappointing 72-90 record last season. It was the team’s fourth-straight losing season.
RELATED: That four-season losing streak is the longest since the woeful Atlanta teams of the 1980s that went seven years without cracking 81 wins in a 162-game season. As for Braves fans, some are doing their best to find a silver lining.

It was complete stupidity and he is ashamed. ‘He has let his family down.’ But an unabashed Gorman, a West Bromwich Albion fan, boasted of another time he shed his clothes during a sporting event He said: ‘I’ve also done it at a cricket match in Droitwich, when I jumped on the umpire’s back. ‘I’m actually a Baggies fan and this was the first time I had been to a football match. I went for the day out. ‘My mate wanted me to do the streak earlier, but I wanted to see a bit of the game.’. Exposure: Gorman pleaded guilty to indecent exposure after being caught streaking across the pitch in February Friend Louis Robinson, who made the wager, said: ‘It was the 75th minute and Shay Given was taking a goal kick.
‘I bet him £100 to do a streak. He was going to run up to Mario Balotelli and give him some stick but Balotelli was not playing. ‘He thought he would still do it anyway. The players looked absolutely disgusted. ‘He’s not had the £100 but he’s had a couple of good nights out on it! He was like a celebrity down Broad Street.’ Jonathan Purser, prosecuting, said an officer at the match heard a cheer from the Doug Ellis Stand at 5.30pm and saw Gorman running on the pitch from the Holte End. ‘You could clearly see his genitals,’ said Mr Purser.
‘He was carrying a T-shirt and trousers in his hand.’ Mr Purser said when stewards went to intercept him, Gorman changed direction - but he was eventually detained and escorted off the pitch.
